Ethan Perez bolted into the police station so fast that Officer Davis jumped. Realizing it was a child, Davis grew concerned. "Are you lost? Do your parents know where you are?" Ethan nodded. "My mom's the one who sent me over. How long till you release my dad?" Officer Davis raised an eyebrow. "What's his name?" The small boy informed. "Kanoa. Kanoa Perez."
Detective James Darrin was losing patience. He knew that Kanoa was involved in a possibly fatal hit-and-run. He knew that Kanoa had the wealth and connections to do it. Detective Darrin knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Kanoa was guilty. He just had to prove it. The Detective's cellphone rang and he picked it up, leaving the interrogation room and locking the door behind him. "Hello?"
Kale didn't waste anytime. "Have you got anything on him yet? Anything linking him to this? Please, Darrin say you got him." Detective Darrin disliked calls like this. "Look, Kale, I am trying my best here. I have nothing to go on. No evidence of phone conversations, no evidence of plans to harm, no pay off. For Sims Sake, I even tried seeing if there was an off shore account. I got nothing, Kale, I'm sorry but until I can prove something I have to release the scumbag."
Kale felt pressure behind his skull and could feel a migraine coming on. "Thanks anyways, James, I appreciate the effort." He hung up feeling dejected.
Detective Darrin re-entered the interrogation room. He absolutely knew Kanoa was guilty of instigating the hit-and-run. He stared at Kanoa. Kanoa, calm as a cucumber asked, "Do you have anything else to ask me?" Darrin used every bit of self control he had. "You are free to leave now, as you well know." Darrin glared at Kanoa. "But I tell you this, Perez, if and when you slip up I will be there. Make no mistake about that."
Kale got another phone call. It was his sister-in-law Jazlyn. "How could you? Ethan was home! He saw the police haul him away for questioning!" Kale bit his tongue before he said something he regreted. " Jazlyn, this is beyond the police at this point! Your husband tried to kill Holly-my Holly! I will take whatever steps I have to, to keep her safe. Do you understand?" Jazlyn spoke softly. "You really care about her." Kale paused. Jazlyn continued. "Do you care about her more than you did me when we were together?" Kale felt pain stab through him. He spoke gruffily. "Jazlyn, you know I fought for you, fought hard for you. But our love wasn't enough. You ran to Kanoa. Now you have to live with it." Kale paused trying not to be rude. "I love Holly. More than anyone in the world. So I will protect her." Kale lowered his voice though no one was listening. "And if you care about Ethan and Desiree you will protect them." He hung up the phone.
Ethan stood infront of his father. "So, what happened?" Kanoa patted his head nonchalantly. "Nothing. The cops made a mistake." Ethan nodded, feeling relieved. "Good, lets go home."
The nurse had entered the room. "Mr.Perez, I don't think you've gotten any sleep in the last three days. Why don't you take a nap in an empty patient room?" Kale almost argued but then realized she was right. As soon as his head hit the pillow he fell asleep.
Kyle arrived and let himself quietly into Holly's room. He stared at her, finally accepting everything. "You know I keep a pretty good eye on her. Nothing else to do around here." Kyle recognized the voice and managed a small smile as he turned around. "And who keeps an eye on you?"
The young woman grinned. "Well I guess you better keep an eye on me since you never know what I may do." She held up her wrists trying to make light of her attempted suicide. Kyle didn't laugh. "I don't find that funny. Especially since if you had succeeded I wouldn't have had anyone to talk to Holly's first day here. And trust me, I needed someone to talk to." The woman, embarrassed changed the subject. "Name's Lyddia Engle. Race you to the cafeteria." She turned and bolted down the hallway. Kyle followed her.
Lyddia, sitting down slurping ramen noodles stared at Kyle in disgust. "Please tell me you aren't going to chug all of that...and your completely ignoring me." Kyle chugged every last ounce of his Kaboom soda. "I wonder why the call it Kaboom...."
BELCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lyddia gave Kyle the stink eye. "That was beyond gross." Kyle smiled and winked. "Just one of my many, many charms." Lyddia laughed. "Well, atleast your good looking, even if you do gross guy stuff." Kyle smiled again, laughing. He was actually having fun. Lyddia looked up at a wall clock. "I gotta go, time for my daily dose of reality with the shrink." She rolled her eyes. "Hope to see you around again, Kaboom." Kyle nodded, liking the nickname. "Likewise."
After Lyddia left, Kyle straightened up the table they had been sitting at. The red-headed nurse approached him uncertain. "Look, I know your dealing with alot right now. But please be careful. Lyddia, she jokes alot but this wasn't her first attempt." She smiled sympathetically. "I just know your sister's life is in the balance and you shouldn't have to worry about-" Kyle interrupted her. "No, I get it. Don't be surprised if they both die." The nurse shook her head. "That's not what I meant." Kyle stalked off before giving her the chance to apologize. He couldn't hang around the hospital another minute and decided to go home.
Kale stood quite still. He just couldn't believe she was awake. He had just accepted that she might have been comatose forever or possibly die. He was unprepared for this. "How are you feeling?" He said the first thing he could think of and then winced. What kind of question was that? Holly swallowed and said hoarsely, "I feel like I've been hit by a moving van." Kale very gingerly sat on the bed next to her.
He pulled Holly as close to him as he could without crushing her, or making her injuries worse. "I thought I had lost you." Kale voiced his fear. Holly shook her head, "Not yet." Kale took her hand gently. "I bet I look terrible." Holly stated rather dryly. Kale disagreed. "You look beautiful to me." His mouth twitched in amusement. "If you were able to walk down the aisle, I would marry you this instant." Holly giggled and Kale felt relief beyond measure.
